The Motorola W220 is an inexpensive phone for users who just want the basics, and aren’t looking for cutting-edge features. The glossy black flip phone is sleek and user-friendly. Users can use the glossy black lid as a mirror, and the front display also doubles as a notification screen. Using three LED icons, the phone tells users when there's an incoming call, text message or when the battery is charging. The W220's keypad lights up in a cool blue shade when activated and is responsive to key presses. The directional control lets users access four customizable shortcuts, while the central button brings up the phone's main menu. Although the 15-inch screen is small compared to others, it is bright and large enough for simple tasks. The large fonts used when dialing numbers and the text messaging fonts are all clearly readable an arm's length away. Call volume and sound quality were loud and clear.

Beyond that, users also get the typical SMS, MMS capabilities and WAP 2.0 connectivity for downloading additional wallpapers, ringtones and games. One advantage to limited multimedia is the long battery life: the W220 has 8 hours talk time and 12 days standby time. The only multimedia available on the phone is a built-in FM radio. One interesting feature is the Lantern mode which switches the LCD to an illuminated white screen for a predefined length of time: 30 seconds, 1 and 2 minutes. While it's not as strong as a dedicated LED white light, it does come in handy in the event of a blackout. The phone will also prompt you if you want to extend the lantern when it's running out of “fuel”. That’s it for the multimedia features – the W220 doesn’t come with either an MP3 player or a camera. However, the Motorola W220 should appeal to people who just want a no-frills, easy-to-use phone. People working in sensitive industries and military personnel will also find the W200 an attractive camera-less phone option.
