The Motorola Q is an extremely thin smartphone that includes an integrated QWERTY keyboard, a camera, Exchange synchronization, and Windows software, making it a strong contender for corporate users. Although the phone is thin, holding it is sometimes uncomfortable. The width of the phone forces a user to grip tightly, which makes the Q’s angular edges and a large ridge designed to protect the scroll wheel bite into the hand. Another disappointment is the keyboard. The keys are smooth, have rounded tops, and are made of a very hard plastic, making them very slippery. This, combined with a difficult layout, made the keyboard problematic. Calls were easy to hear, and reception was good. The microphone works well indoors but is susceptible to high levels of wind noise outdoors. When ringing or playing media, the speaker tends to be loud enough indoors, but difficult to hear ringing outdoors or in noisy environments, especially once it's trapped inside your pocket. The weak vibrating alert didn't help this situation.

SMS, MMS, Exchange email and regular email are all handled within the Messaging application. Internet speeds and email download rates were speedy; similar to other Verizon EV-DO enabled devices. The Q also offers Bluetooth, but does not offer Wi-Fi. Pleasingly, the phone gets about two and half days of battery life under normal conditions. The Q features a 1.3 megapixel camera that's capable of shootings stills and small frame video. It takes reasonable shots in good lighting conditions, and offers many shooting options, such as brightness, image size, zoom, white balance and flash. Windows Media player is a robust application for both audio and video files. The Q can play WMA, MP3 and most common audio files, and WMV or 3GP videos. Videos can be played in a number of orientations including horizontal full screen. When using Bluetooth headphones, all audio is played through them. Additional memory for programs and data storage can be added via miniSD. For those looking for a thin smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard, the Motorola Q is great. However, the wide design may turn off some users.
