BlackBerry Pearl 8130 (Sprint) Review

LAPTOP Magazine
15 July 2008
  • Summary: Despite the lack of Wi-Fi capability, we highly recommend the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 for Sprint. This slim smart phone juggles multimedia and push e-mail well, and unlike the Verizon Wireless version of this handset, you can watch TV and download tunes on the go. If you want the same features but a full keyboard--and you don't mind a little extra bulk--spend the extra $20 for Sprint's BlackBerry Curve 8330.

CNET
17 May 2008
  • Summary: The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 improves on an already-impressive smartphone with the addition of GPS, video recording, and 3G support.
  • Pros: The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 keeps the same sleek design of its predecessor but adds built-in GPS, EV-DO support, and video-recording capabilities. The smartphone's Web browser is also improved, and it has a 2-megapixel camera. The device's messaging functions remain strong.
  • Cons: The SureType keyboard takes some acclimation, and call quality could be slightly better.

Sprint's version supports the carrier's various mobile entertainment services, and the device's messaging functions remain strong.
  • Cons: The BlackBerry 8130's SureType keyboard takes some acclimation. Video playback isn't the smoothest, and the various wireless options can take a toll on the battery life.

RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130

PC Magazine
7 February 2008
  • Conclusion: RIM upgrades its successful Pearl for Sprint and Verizon customers. The 8130 gets some of the latest technology, including a 2-megapixel camera, GPS, and 3G data speeds, while keeping all of the original Pearl's virtues intact.
  • Pros: 3G data speeds. Enhanced media features and Web browser. Optional GPS. Capable camera.
  • Cons: SureType keyboard is largely a personal preference. No document editing. Verizon version lacks V Cast music and video support.
