With a 2.0 megapixel camera, GPRS and EDGE capabilities, Bluetooth 2.0, an mp3 player, 80MB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot, the phone has basic equipment. However, there are many problems with the components on this phone. The D830 has below average sound quality, and the speakers crack at high volume. It sometimes isn’t possible to hear the phone ring. The silent mode works fine, although it does drain the battery. In order to make the camera thinner, Samsung used a smaller battery, resulting in talk time of just 4 hours. Although the phone is very slim, it is very black and somewhat boring on the outside.
Flipping open the D830 is awkward, and holding it is surprising uncomfortable for smaller hands. The unergonomic keypad is awkward and difficult to use, mainly because there’s no tactile feedback on whether a button has been pushed. On a good note, however, the internal 240 x 320 pixel screen is bright. The Samsung D830 has a 2 MP camera, which takes ok pictures. There is no flash, so internal photos , this camera also falls short of a flash and the night mode is pretty bad. The D830 also has a music player, which can be minimized and while using the other features of the phone. The music player has support for MP3, AAC, ACC+, and WMA formats. The phone also has limited video capabilities. Overall, although the Samsung SGH-D830 has all the elements of a good phone, the execution based on the slim profile means that it’s hard to use.
