  • Will my KDX794 except an external hard drive with mp3s?

Will my KDX794 except an external hard drive with mp3s? I currently use my ipod nano, but I have a 2TB Western Digital externalHD that I want to try and see if it'll work. ??

Maybe The documentation says that it can only read fat16 and fat32 formated media so you first may have to re-format the drive. Next, the drive needs it's own power supply, you could try just running a cord out to the car to plug the drive in to test it. If you plan on leaving it in the car it will need it's own power supply, ideally a regulated, switching DC-DC power supply, with a switch. Next, you may want to re-organize the files on the drive so that the deck can read them, here are the limitations Maximum number of folder layers 8 Maximum number of folders (per device) *1 255 Maximum number of files (per folder) 255 Maximum number of files and folders (per device) 65025 Next, The Deck will take quite some time to read the disk, and might take just as long each time you connect it, or perhapses even when the power is more

Hmmmm. I actually sent back the Western Digital External Hard Drive and got a 500gb Iomega BlackBelt External Hard Drive. After contacting Western Digital customer service, they told me that it would not be able to be formatted to FAT32 file. And when you mentioned: "The documentation says that it can only read fat16 and fat32 formated media so you first may have to re-format the drive." Was this from/for the KDX794? All in all, i want to move my itunes onto the new external hard drive (iomega, which can be FAT32 formatted), but itunes is not FAT32..right? If so, great!! I want to partition the drive for 3/4 music (itunes, mp3) and the other 1/4 for Playstation3 data (which is FAT32 as well). And last, the new iomega external hard drive is right out of the box so nothing is on it. Thanks for your input and time. more

Happy to report that my just un-boxed x794 does read and play from the drive I was planning on using (Hitachi 120gb, system pull from Levovo) I removed the recovery partition, formated it with the "fat32format" command line utility, and hooked it up to the head unit with a $5 enclosure adapter from amazon. I got the one I did because it had the split power wire so I could make sure the drive got it's own power. Right on the drive it says 700ma of draw @ 5v so additional power is a must. Higher spindle speed drives would be more consumptive generally. The deck can read Itunes files but not DRM protected ones. When you move the files over to the Fat 32 drive they will be fine, even if the host drive was NTFS or whatever. It should work to put the PS3 data on there as well, but remember my warning about not caring about data on the more
