Reliable and easy to use

 • Excerpt: Easy to use, and it stays in place. The plate comes off easily with one hand and it doesn't wobble or loosen mysteriously when in use. The handles are a little smooth to feel like you're getting a good grip, but they tighten easily and stay that way until you say otherwise. The range of motion is pretty good but if you're real low to the ground shooting horizontally, there is a limit to it's range, but it mostly depends on the angle of your tripod!
 • Pros: Attaches Firmly, Good Stability, Large Range of Motion, Strong Clamp

Solid but large

Andrew, B&H Photo
10 January 2014
 • Excerpt: I bought this head because I have always used 3-way heads, but it ended being a bit larger than I expected, but I don't think I checked the dimensions in the specs. I have used this tripod head on a larger studio size tripod, and it was extremely stable. If you're looking for a 3-way head for a larger, studio tripod, this one would be an excellent choice.

A very nice tripod head

 • Excerpt: I needed a heavy duty and versatile pan/tilt tripod head to handle a fairly heavy vintage medium format camera and I found that in the Manfrotto 808RC4 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head. The head moves very smoothly and effortlessly in all three axis and the control handles go from free to full lock with a minimum amount of rotation.

While the specs mention two spirit levels, the head in fact has a total of three.
 • Pros: Attaches Firmly, Good Stability, Large Range of Motion, Many Unexpected Features, Strong Clamp, Very Smooth Fluid Motion

Manfrotto 808RC4

 • Excerpt: Tripod: Giottos GIYTL8383
Head: Manfrotto 808RC4

I purchased the set to use together so I might as well write about them together.

The generic problem is that when companies develop specialized items, such as Quick Release plates, nothing else fits. Everything, then, takes a lot more time to assemble than the old time ¼-20 tripod screw.

I have several other 808RC4 heads, and they work reliably.

Too Much

Tim, B&H Photo
11 September 2013
 • Excerpt: As long as you're not working with medium format or enormous lenses, this thing is way overkill. It's overly beefy and heavy for location work, and tightening it down is quite an effort that gives blisters mighty quick. I'll be returning this for something lighter duty.
 • Pros: Good Stability
 • Cons: Heavy
