Summary: Not impressed:the major drawback IMO being its lack of smoothness, which makes small adjustments very tricky,it will either not budge or move too much, this is really annoying me. Other than that,it's lightweight, has a nice design, ergonomics are good,it's not outrageously priced, but all this is pointless if adjusting the camera position is a pain:you buy a 3-way head to be able to easily adjust your camera position, which requires smooth action, this head has a lot of...
Pros: Lightweight,nice looking,good ergonomics,relatively cheap (73€ on ebay)
Cons: Build quality:not smooth, has a lot of friction, tends to stick in position
Manfrotto 804RC2 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head with Quick Release review by cas5
17 September 2010
Summary: While the price is compelling, this is not a head that I would recommend for professional use. First, the rubber on the quick release plate allows mirror slap to be amplified and cause softness in your images. When evaluating heads, mount your camera to the head and pull down on the front of your lens. If the lens moves even a little pick a different head. With this head the lens moves quite a bit. Next, fine adjustments are difficult with this head.
Pros: Reasonable price
Cons: Rubber plate, difficult to make minor adjustments
Summary: I used this head on the Manfrotto 055x tripod. The design is simple, straight forward, smooth panning and solid designed. Works perfectly. If you like simple and solid design this is the one for you. I use this head for night, dark, long exposure, portraits and self action remote trigger shots. Everything is solid and tightens securely and it makes a perfect match with the Manfrotto tripod.
Summary: Since purchasing this head it has been used most of the time on a monopod doing sports photography. I find that this head is exactly what I needed when using some of my bigger lenses. It affords me a stable platform from which to work from and the shorter control knobs do not get in the way. The quick release works great and I really like the solid locking of the quick release mechanism. I would recommend this head to any other photo enthusiast.
Pros: Easy To Use, Fits Well, Improves Tripod Function
