nice head

  • Summary: For many applications, the head works fine, including with the use of a sidekick. The head is a good value, but of course, is not up to the level of the more expensive heads. I have 2 of them that I've used for 2 or 3 years now. Both of them will sag, losing your framing, after locking down the head, if the lens/body aren't balanced, which is typical if you have a rather heavy lens on the camera, that doesn't have a tripod collar.
  • Pros: Good Stability, Large Range of Motion
  • Cons: Can shift after locked, Heavy

Solid and well made - quality throughout

  • Summary: The 490 Ball Head is about as rugged and well made as I could imagine, and exactly what I expect from Manfrotto. The product picture is very deceiving. The head is HUGE. The circumfrence of that lower portion is about like a soda or beer can. This is NOT your typical "enthusiast" level ballhead. This is a monster, and truly aimed at the professional. Yes, it's a bit heavy and obviously not intended for a travel rig, but it is solidly built and worth every penny.
  • Pros: Fits Well, Improves Tripod Function
