What a Tripod!

George the Classicist, Adorama
8 June 2014
  • Excerpt: This may be the last tripod I would ever need to buy. I had thought of buying the Gitzo GT4542LS model but am very glad I bought this model instead. With my Nikon F5 + 200-400mm zoom lens (with a Kirk lens plate attached instead of the Nikon foot), it balances perfectly. It is surprising light for its capability. I am 6'1", and with the legs fully extended, I only need to put on a pair of tennis shoes to align my eyes to the camera's viewfinder.
  • Pros: Folds Small, Good height, Good Stability, High Quality Built, High Quality Finish, Lightweight, Unfolds Quickly
  • Cons: None

Great tripod

The Wizard, B&H Photo
24 April 2014
  • Excerpt: I was using a Series 3 (Gitzo) tripod with an 800mm lens and the 1Dx which is quite a load, especially in windy conditions. This combo was pushing the limits of my series 3. The Series 5 handles the weigh easily even with a sand bag attached. I see no drawbacks other than the obvious weight and bulk concerns, but no one's going on a long hike with an 800mm, pro body and a tripod anyway.
  • Pros: Good Stability

Rock Solid Support

Denny, B&H Photo
6 February 2014
  • Excerpt: When planning the purchase of my Sony 500mm f/4 lens, I wanted to be sure it was supported by the best gimbal and tripod available. The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with quick release base was an easy choice and I totally agree with their recommendation to use their gimbal head on a Gitzo Systematic tripod. I chose a Series 5 6X carbon fiber model that is rated to support 88 pounds. It is rock solid. The construction is very beefy yet it weighs only 6 pounds.
  • Pros: Excellent build quality, Good Stability, Great value, Unfolds Quickly

Solid as a rock.

Jerry, B&H Photo
25 December 2013
  • Excerpt: Bought this to use with a Nikon 500mm lens. Using the Wimberly 200 head. Impressed with build. Very solid on my trial run. Comforting when using lots of expensive gear. The disadvantage is the bulk and weight, but that pales when to compared to $ plus of gear broken on the ground.

Very well made & Exceptional value

Gene, B&H Photo
19 April 2013
  • Excerpt: My primary use is for wildlife with my 400/2.8 lens. Also for general nature and landscape photography. Upon removing the GT5542LS from its box, I was impressed by the design and build quality, and am assured that it will be more than capable of providing a sturdy, rock solid platform for my gear. I like the reference marks on the top section which put the height right where I need it for my 400mm lens and Wimberly gimbal head.

  • Cons: Price

You Get what You Pay For

DPAli, B&H Photo
19 March 2013
  • Excerpt: Sometimes it is just that simple: you get what you pay for. At $xxxx, one might think it insane to buy this tripod (add a comparable head, and you are at $xxxx). But then you use it: strong, light, and moving parts that work with the smoothness one expects from high end aircraft parts. i have bought and used excellent $xxx tripods for my regular lens. no complaints about those and i continue to use them.

Rock solid you can see and feel that it's made to perfection. I am very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this tripod if you have heavy gear.
