Excerpt: When I lock the ball head for the first several times, it needs with extra firm for tightening up. The oil comes from the slit and it is thick. Sooner or later, the head becomes stable and smooth without extra firming.
Excerpt: The Gitzo GH3780 head has rehabilitated an old aluminium Gitzo Series 4 tripod that I had lying around. It's an excellent tripod head, and easily holds the equipment I intend to use (a digital SLR and a 300 mm + 2x, or a 14mm - 24mm zoom are my heaviest lenses).
Pros: Attaches Firmly, Good Stability, Strong Clamp
Excerpt: The head operates flawlessly and smoothly. The bases however are a real problem especially with the lens ring for the Nikon 70-200 f2.8. The base of the ring is smooth. THe Gitzo foot does not grip the base very well. A couple of slight torques on the lens will cause the whole assembly to loosen.
Pros: Good Stability, Large Range of Motion, Strong Clamp
Excerpt: This is one of the best engineered pieces of equipment I have ever owned. I have a 1ds MarkII and an Arca Swiss 4x5. This holds anything steady. Its not heavy at all...this is the real thing. If this were the first ball head I had ever bought it would be my last.
Pros: Attaches Firmly, Good Stability, Large Range of Motion, Strong Clamp
