Summary: Only thing I do ot like is that it does not have a friction control but u can get around that by the amount u release the regualr controls - it is just that u have to think about it - but u get used to it - The next model up has a friction control but it is much bigger and heavier. I also wish it had a pan + tilt built in.
Summary: For starters, the 1780Qr is smaller and lighter than the 1178m, but it holds more. I put my big zoom on it and it is rock solid. The new ballhead is very easy to move without much effort or drag.
Summary: Got this to pair it with my Gitzo 1541T tripod, I was going for minimal weight for travelling. Does what it says, and overall very happy with it. It is very light and works well with my setup (40D + 580EXii + 17-55mm).
Summary: This ballhead is very good.It is small and light and can support a heavy load (for that size). All locking mechanisms are smooth. There are levels on the 3 axis. The only flaw (to me) is the aluminum plate locking mechanism for the quick release. If the tripod is subject to a lot of vibrations (suv 4x4 trip) the plate screw has the tendency to move requiring a new adjustment. Short of this little problem (which can be fixed with a viscous glue) this is a good buy.
Summary: This ballhead is the first I have bought, and to go along with my Gitzo tripod. It has shown no problems so far, has smooth action, well placed controls, and offers the features 95% of photographers will need (vertical format groove, panoramic rotation, convenient quick release).
Summary: Used in conjunction with a carbon tripod this combination is extremely light-weight; the ballhead moves without requiring grease so there is no problem with dust clean-up; the levels are fantastic; just one small complaint: the plate attachment for the camera could be stronger.
Summary: Excellent with the GT-1541T Traveler 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs. Finally a ballhead that works flawlessly for securing tightly my Canon 70-200 f2.8 L (and with a 2x extender). Light weight and strong. Perfect!
Summary: I use this with my Gitzo GH1540 tripod legs and they make a great setup for My primary use: hiking and backpacking. This ball head is very compact and lightweight, two virtues I view more as a necessity than a nicety. I was a bit concerned about the tightening wheel, but it is big, easy to grip and machined for grip, even with gloves on. Overall I have found this ball head fantastic and am very happy with my purchase!
