Excerpt: Handy little gadget to keep in your kit but let's be honest it's not going to replace a ring light. Hence the four stars and with that in mind I have a couple of suggestions for Olympus: make it so it can be used off-camera and/or make the arms a bit longer/or allow you to extend them. I've just acquired this bit of gear, so time will tell how much use I get out of it; but it seems to be well built. It's easy and fun to use. Hope this helps, happy shooting.
Excerpt: Sometimes lighting for macto is tricky because you get close enough to block your own light. This nifty gadget solves the problem. Just be careful to disengage it carefully using the unlock button in the front. This even has different light intensities. Because it connects to the Olympus power slot at the back of the hot shoe, I am assuming it cannot be used for any other cameras.
Excerpt: I use the MAL-1 for field macro work. I have been using the light to augment ambient light on macro subjects. n particular I find it most useful for lifting shadows around the eyes and facial features. Light weight unit. Very pliable and holds position. Light has clean white cast. I wish Olympus would put a hot shot or PC connector on the unit so one could fire a flash. Would make an excellent focusing lamp for diffused flash macro.
Excerpt: This little pair of lights won't do anything that a set of, say, microscope lamps wouldn't do, but as long as all you need is a main and a fill light, it is MUCH more convenient than the alternatives. There are other options-ring light, pair of small strobes attached to the lens, etc., and they will let you stop down for better depth of field, but if your subject is small, and not very "long" on the lens axis, this will do fine--and the price is right.
Pros: Convewnient, Easy To Use, Inexpensive, Lightweight
Excerpt: Excellent tool for macro shooting. It is almost as good as a ring light, but it takes getting used to. It is so easy to manually manipulate each light and get the effecto perfect. Am amazed. It sure beats the somewhat cheaper knockoffs that run off their own batteries. This runs off the camera battery. IT IS WONDERFUL !
Excerpt: It's everything I wanted it to be, Small, Light, Flexible, and Bright. The arms stay where you place then and don't sag or droop unexpectedly. The switches seem a bit meek, but they work just fine, and if I'm careful with them I expect they will last a lifetime. The attachment locking pin is a nice feature that insures that everything stays in it's proper place when you're getting things set up.
Excerpt: I bought this light to use when taking macro images. I have used it and it works to my specifications. It is light weight and maneuverable allowing you to put the light exactly where you want it. My only wish is that the High setting be a bit brighter.
