Summary: This is an easy to use and versatile flash for general use. My gripe about it is its remote capability. It can be triggered remotely using Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS), but it lacks a remote function called SU-4 which is critical to professional remote flash work. It existed on earlier models and is also a function of the venerable sb-800, but somehow Nikon decided to leave it out of the sb-600.
Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easy To Use, Lightweight
Summary: I think I got spoiled by using the SB-800. It broke and I needed a replacement while it was being repaired so I bought the SB-600. It has enough features for me but doesn't fire fast enough for my needs.
Summary: I use it as a background, hair, and accent light in a four light portrait setup. It works great with the built in Nikon ittl lighting system as a remote flash. It is lighter, smaller, and cheaper than its bigger brothers (SB800/900) It does not have a pc outlet so it won't work with a radio slave. It does not come with a omni dome for bare bulb effects. It can't be used as the master flash in a multi light set up.
Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Easy To Clean, Fast Recycling, Lightweight, Quiet
Summary: For a beginner that I am I guess it did the job, but if I were to buy it again I would probably go with the sb800 as it has so many more great features, this is pretty basic and it doesn't let you detach from the camera. I still need to practice more to get it right because for exterior shots I don't quite get it to work right. I get the object well light up, but then I lose detail in the background.
Summary: I purchased my first dslr camera (nikon d40) and after reading several reviews and advice from one of my photographer friends, my first choice would have been the sb-800 but the price was a little higher than I was willing to pay right now and the sb-400 was not as flexible as the sb-600 so I went with the 600. So far I really like the flash but honestly I have not done much out of auto mode since receiving last week.
Pros: Easily Interchangeable, Economical, Fast Recycling, Lightweight, Quiet
