Excerpt: Once you get comfortable with the controls (the manual, as with almost all Metz products, is useless and poorly translated into English) it is a great flash. It has all of the power needed and it is relatively easy to use as a slave.
Pros: Well built, powerful, fast recycle time.
Cons: Confusing menues, steep learning curve, settings not saved when replacing batteries, short battery life (when powered by AA's)
Summary: Just put the Metz 58 through its paces. Auto mode works perfectly, and P-TTL mode is just about as accurate. Also has a very short pre-flash in PTTL that you barely notice - no red eye yet- although I prefer to use auto as I think the light sensor on the flash is more accurate. You will see many complaints about the menus on the 58. Pay no attention. The menus are fine. You have to hit one button before you make adjustments because all the keys are soft keys.
Pros: Full functions on my K20D, Light, Powerful, Secondary Reflector, Sturdy
Summary: I love this flash. I briefly owned a Canon Speedlight 580EX but found that it underexposed most shots. Instead of working around the Canon's issues I got the Metz. No complaints. Works well in ETTLII with my 40D. The auto mode is also great and very useable particularly for fill flash outside. The integrated small second flash comes in handy if you want to add some sparkle to someone's eyes when bouncing the main flash off the ceiling. I love the menu.
Pros: Consistent Output, Fast Recycling, Versatile
Summary: It took some reading to understand most things but it finally worked out. The plastic mount will outlast an aluminum mount easily. Some plastics of today are better than metals. Know what you are talking about before before critizing. The overall build quality is excellent and the exposures are even better. If I had a beef, it would be the weather ability of the unit and their warning may be largely precautionary. It is not an underwater flash though.
Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Easy To Clean, Fast Recycling, Lightweight, Quiet
Summary: This flash was far better than I expected! I was looking at getting the 580ex II, but decided on this flash because it has Master controls & an extra strobe in the front. The flash also has a white bounce card like the 580. I use this flash to control my 430ex flashes perfectly! I also like the ability to update the flash firmware to add new abilities in the future. I didn't find navigating the menu system hard, it made sense to me and I can work through it with ease.
Pros: Consistent Output, Extra Strobe, Fast Recycling
