Not up to par

Heather, B&H Photo
1 July 2013
  • Excerpt: I have been using this flash for about 4 months now, after having to replace my previous speedlite. I'm a semi-pro photographer and this flash has been nothing but a problem for me while on jobs. Especially at children's parties, when you have only a second to capture that specific shot.
  • Pros: Durable, Easy To Use
  • Cons: Overheats easily

Nice flash when it worked

Deb, Adorama
13 October 2012
  • Excerpt: I've owned this flash for 3 years but don't use it frequently. Great when it worked. Needed to send it in for repair after 2 years when it stopped working. After $125 in repair, it has failed again. Told out of warrantee so nothing can be done. Expected more than that from Canon.
  • Pros: Easy To Use, Lightweight, Versatile
  • Cons: Died After Short Use, Slow Recycling

  • Excerpt: With my new 5D Mark III, I still have to go to ASA 800 or above to get acceptable bounce flash result in the 10 to 15 foot distance range. Controls are overly complex and except in direct flash with no defuser this flash is simply under powered.

not what I thought

create an image!, Adorama

  • Excerpt: Sent the flash back. The internal "zoom" motor was too noisy in a quiet environment. It lacked the output I was used to. (had the 580ex) Paid extra for the 580EXII. MUCH better. Ordered two of them! Adorama was great to deal with- even with the returns.

Not bad, but would not buy again

5 August 2010
  • Excerpt: This is definitely a flash for non-professional uses... If you're looking for a decent flash for a reasonable price, this is the flash for you. However, this flash will not cut it for professional purposes. The flash itself is very easy to use, and for the most part efficient for most purposes.
  • Pros: Easy To Use, Powerful Output, Versatile
  • Cons: Bulky, Overheats easily, Slow Recycling

Uneven frame coverage

LandScaper, B&H Photo
21 November 2009
  • Excerpt: Bought it along with 7D as it has wireless transmitter, thus no need for 580ex. Everything works as expected, besides the white wall test. On wider zooms (27-50 equiv) it is very uneven, compare to Sigma 500 DG; has significant fallout on sides and shoots higher, thus at distances < 10 feet bottom...
  • Pros: Easy To Use, Fast Recycling, Lightweight
  • Cons: Uneven frame coverage, Weak Output
