  • Excerpt: There was a very good movie to be made out of Water for Elephants , Sara Gruen's period novel that was thick on atmospherics and melodrama but thin on character development. It would have required some tweaking, some bold choices from screenwriter Richard LaGravenese in his adaptation, and most of all a willingness from all involved to liven up these characters as more than glamorous paper dolls in the Complete 1931 Circus Set.

  • Excerpt: The screen adaptation of Sara Gruen’s bestselling historical novel Water For Elephants has this in its favor: It’s the perfect release for an Easter weekend, when families nationwide will be looking for inoffensive, moderately engaging entertainment to distract them for a few hours without unduly upsetting anyone.

  • Conclusion: Familiar but enjoyable. Not being funny, the elephant (Rosie, played by nine-foot enchantress Tai) is the real star as the most moving and only joyful presence in sight.

  • Summary: Some films are so entertaining, their flaws can be forgiven. Such is the case with Water for Elephants . It’s an imperfect, schmaltzy beast that feels like a film from a bygone era, and not just because it’s set in the 1930s. This is no prequel or sequel; it doesn’t rely heavily on CGI. It’s a fast-paced adventure tale like they used to make ‘em, a slice of old-fashioned Hollywood that traverses tragedy, romance and exotic travel. Step right up folks and join the circus.

  • Summary: En mustig historia om cirkus och kärlek i trettiotalets USA, som dessvärre är lite för blodfattig för att man ska haja till rejält. Fint ljud, bra bild och en helt OK extrasektion höjer det genomsnittliga omdömet.
