Conclusion: The digital restoration of director Ted Kotcheff's classic film Wake in Fright is very problematic. In fact, the final result is every bit as frustrating as the recent presentations of Marcel Carne's Children of Paradise and Jacques Demy's Lola . Naturally, even though the film has been virtually impossible to see for years, my advice to you is to consider renting Eureka Entertainment's Blu-ray release.
Conclusion: It would be unfortunate if debates over the restoration process overshadowed the film that has been rescued and restored. The restoration team has made its artistic choices, and what appears on this Blu-ray is how the film has been preserved for the ages. The alternative would have been to have it disappear for all time, thereby depriving the world of a unique and harrowing tale of a civilized man's systematic disassembly by . . . what exactly?
