Trust (1990)

  • Conclusion: Trust is a rather bizarre experience. The characters are fascinating, and some of the writing is very sharp, but there's also a kind of smarmy, unseemly aspect to being asked to laugh at such hapless folks. Helping to overcome this unsettling feeling is the uniformly good work of a very capable cast. Shelly and Donovan work extremely well together, and their fragile "love" affair (for want of a better term) is quite compelling.

Trust Review

  • Excerpt: Trust has a lot to talk about. It’s all uncomfortable, Annie (Liana Liberato) chatting with someone whom she believes is her online boyfriend. Her parents think it’s casual teenager stuff, letting Annie be. Unfortunately, the “boyfriend” is a 35-year old posing as a high school volleyball star, a manipulative, infinitely creepy predator waiting to strike, and he does. Trust spirals out of control, Annie thoroughly convinced Charlie is just misunderstood.

  • Conclusion: Trust is a frightening and oftentimes difficult movie to watch, but despite its many challenges and adult themes, it might just prove to be enough of a shock to the system that could save others from experiencing the horrors of online predators. A great script and amazing performances round the movie into form as one of the best real-world true Horror pictures of the past decade.

  • Excerpt: A revenge drama minus the revenge, the David Schwimmer-directed Trust portrays the impotent rage of wanting to right a wrong that has no legal recourse. The claustrophobic film offers a strange anti-catharsis; it’s all tension and frustration with no crowd-pleasing release. With a little tweaking, this easily could have veered into grindhouse exploitation or mindless wish-fulfillment, but Schwimmer’s detached, theatrical approach to his material makes it is more cerebral...
