TO CATCH A THIEF - Blu-ray review

moviemet.com

  • Summary: It may not be one of Hitchcock's best suspense capers, but it's surely one of his most glamorous films--stylish, graceful, refined, and subtly humorous.

To Catch a Thief

  • Excerpt: According to the old proverb, "it takes a thief to catch a thief." Often, it takes a serious artist to create the most seemingly lightweight of confections. And such was the case with Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 To Catch a Thief , which has just made its splendid premiere on Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment. The director surrounded himself with the typical array of familiar faces.

  • Conclusion: Who needs substance? 'To Catch a Thief' brims with eye-candy, and its slight story possesses just enough meat to support the suggestive repartee, cat-and-mouse shenanigans, breathtaking French Riviera locations, and combustible chemistry between its two attractive leads. Thrills come at a premium in this Hitchcock classic, but there's enough elegance, charm, humor, and smoldering sexuality to make this light confection as seductive as its female star.

To Catch A Thief

  • Excerpt: The names “Alfred Hitchcock”, “Cary Grant” and “Grace Kelly” are truly the names of immortals. Hollywood icons that were proof that “They don’t make ‘em like they used to”. Hitchcock, who has gone down in history as perhaps the greatest director that has ever lived, had worked with both actors before.

  • Conclusion: To Catch a Thief may be average for a Hitchcock movie, but that still puts it ahead of the vast majority of cinema. This easygoing romantic mystery looks absolutely amazing on Blu-ray and is joined by a wealth of worthwhile bonus features. While anyone collecting Hitchcock on Blu-ray will need no incentive to pick this up, it's worth considering for everyone else.

To Catch a Thief Blu-ray Review

blu-ray.com
25 February 2012
  • Conclusion: To Catch a Thief might not present audiences with the most complexly-woven plot, the most dazzling plot twists, or the most daring revelations, but its strength lies in its adherence to simplicity and delicacy, weaving together a story of romance against a serious but decidedly serene and almost playful backdrop of high-dollar jewel thievery.
