Excerpt: There are certain movies out there that are destined to be hits. I’m talking Harry Potter and Batman or, essentially, any super hero movie. We know it and we accept it. One thing that’s always fascinated me about the movie business are those little films that could. You know what I’m talking about here, those films like Clerks or My Big Fat Greek Wedding . Those that were made on a small budget and became both critically and commercially successful.
Conclusion: The Purge paints with broad strokes and big ideas but remains too small, too implausible, too obvious and too narrow in its focus to do much good. It even fails as a home invasion pic, which is saying something since its genre bits are its best. Thankfully, Universal's Blu-ray release at least makes the most of the film's high definition presentation.
Excerpt: James DeMonaco's The Purge doesn't just pale in the shadow of The Strangers , an old-school spooker that understood that there's no greater horror than the unknown; it cringes in it. A rote home-invasion thriller afraid to be seen as just another rote home-invasion thriller, the film turgidly grasps for profundity by framing bloodlust as patriotic duty.
