  • Excerpt: Turning a fabulously operatic, thematically replete true-life tale into a frosted slice of dinner theatrics, The Last Station conveys nothing more convincingly than its own self-regard. The story of Leo Tolstoy's last days, in exile from his own home, his wife, and possibly the social movement he spearheaded toward the end of his life, rivals any the great novelist could have dreamt up for himself.

The Last Station (2009)

  • Conclusion: If The Last Station were about Leo Tolstoy some 20 years before his death rather than one, the movie wouldn't be called The Last Station , but if the writer's final months as portrayed herein are any indication, it might very well look and feel sort of like those "the most interesting man in the world" commercials.

  • Excerpt: The Film There is no denying that the works of Russian author Leo Tolstoy are more well known than that of his own life. Yet, as The Last Station shows us that the literary icon was as complex - and complicated - as any of his own characters. With the lead character played by Christopher Plummer, the film chronicles his final days when Tolstoy renounces his title and property, much to the disdain of his wife (Helen Mirren).

  • Excerpt: Although it feigns literary prestige, Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station , a chronicle of Leo Tolstoy’s last days, is little more than a gilded trifle, though it offers its share of light enjoyments. Adapting Jay Parini’s novel, Hoffman ( Soapdish ) zeroes in on the battle between Tolstoy’s wife, Sofya (Helen Mirren) and his chief disciple, Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti).

FILMDUDE
1 April 2010
  • Excerpt: Anchored with a passionate but philosophically-conflicted relationship between a husband and wife, "The Last Station" is a sweeping period piece that manages not to overwhelm with historical trappings. The a story is engrossing where, given the subject, it could have been rather dour. The players resist melodrama; there's an almost capricious tone that makes this film a pleasure to watch. It's not revealing too much to say the last station is the end of line.
