Excerpt: I for one like films like this - a bit of fantasy, kind of odd/off the wall. It is unfortunate that Heath Ledger passed a way before the film was completed. I would have preferred to have one actor continue with the role rather than three but the worked it in very well.
Excerpt: An amnesiac with a shady past falls in with a troupe of actors who are engaged in a wager for souls with Lucifer. I have long been a fan of Terry Gilliam's work and even his weaker films up to this point can be regarded as heroic failures that still have much of merit contained within. Up to this point. I'm loathe to say it because of my loyalty to him and respect for Heath Ledger's memory, but this film is an absolute disaster.
Summary: This reviewer was never a fan of the director with regards to plot and pace of story-telling. The artists displayed sincere performances, soundtrack was applicable and effects were gorgeous. Some scenes were just too long and not related to the story. Its premise was unique but the execution was lackluster. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus could have been sensation with the cast alone but falters as a whole.
Summary: Heath Ledger's last film is a masterful fantasy that blends humor, whimsy, and emotion into a visually-compelling and emotionally-arresting piece. Director Terry Gilliam harks back to his Brazil days in crafting a film that succeeds as a visual adventure/fantasy triumph.
Summary: exciting and imaginative, the movie was awesome. i like the pace of the film and the plot was fantastic. the actors are top notch. with undertones of romance and the fantasy adventure styles this movie is sure hold you in your seat until the very end, which you never see coming. so all in all the movie rates a 2.5 outta 5.
Excerpt: The Canadian release by E1films is not quite OAR - it is 1.78:1. It also has distracting billingual cover art. VIDEO clarity, detail and color accuracy are astounding. Black levels are distractingly high on a properly calibrated CRT display. Only sometimes the blacks are truly black, most of the time they are washed out. (I suspect some reviewers are not properly calibrated or using inferior display technology.
Excerpt: As the review has said, "blacks sometimes have a slightly washed out appearance" and that is the case for the PQ. The Imaginarium scences look great but I thought the night scenes in the "real" world were dull. DVD quaility. Seems the PQ gets better as the film moves along, but at first it looks aweful.
Excerpt: In three days, the immortal Doctor Parnassus will forfeit his daughter to the Devil...unless the mysterious, suicidal stranger can save her inside the "mirror world" that is Doctor Parnassus' mind. What a bloated, overwrought, boring piece of crap! It was far too long, far too dull and with far too many pointless scenes. Ledger's final performance is mediocre. PQ and AQ were good.
