The Great Gatsby

ComingSoon
17 October 2013
  • Excerpt: It's been long enough since the 1920s now that there are few individuals left with a living memory of what life was actually like back then, particularly in the frenzied pre-crash days in Manhattan. All we have left instead are the artifacts of the time giving a glimpse, how truthful we do not know, of those days. When it comes to the Roaring Twenties, no glimpse has been more favored or mimicked than F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby.

  • Excerpt: From Willy Loman and his diamonds in Death of a Salesman to the Joads and their famous westbound road trip in The Grapes of Wrath , revealing the American myth as a shiny yet futile fantasy is nothing unfamiliar in literature, but doing so while implicating an audience in its own excess is a more complicated project, one handily taken on by Baz Luhrmann in his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's mostly undisputed masterpiece The Great Gatsby .

  • Conclusion: The Great Gatsby meets one's expectations for a 3D Baz Luhrmann adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel. The director's brand of opulence is surprisingly not at odds with the rich source text. The result is a lavish yet substantial and eminently watchable filming of an enchanting epochal drama. The year is still young, but this is destined to go down as one of its best films.

  • Conclusion: The fourth time isn't the charm. Though Baz Luhrmann's interpretation of 'The Great Gatsby' has merit, especially during its dark last hour, this glitzy, often garish adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic can't be considered the definitive version. By favoring style over substance and adding too many contemporary elements, this manic film lacks the laser focus required to capture the elegance, underlying power, and lingering resonance of this iconic American...

The Great Gatsby

  • Excerpt: If ever there was an actor destined to play Jay Gatsby, I’d have to imagine that Leonardo DiCaprio’s name would have been on the short list (and, obviously that was true).  DiCaprio seems to have that classic look to him and call me crazy, but I could see him having drinks with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Gary Cooper.  How’s that for an obscure reference?

  • Conclusion: Baz, Baz, Baz. I'm a fan, old sport, I am. Moulin Rouge! still gets me every time. Every. Time . But The Great Gatsby is too much flash and way too much fizzle. It isn't a matter of style over substance either. It's a matter of style without substance. The film is too detached from Fitzgerald's novel, too far removed from reality, and too disconnected from the human or historic elements that might offer filmfans a foothold or anchor point.

The Great Gatsby (2013) Blu-ray Review

DoBlu
19 August 2013
  • Excerpt: Never impoverished for content and often anxious with first act pacing, Baz Luhrmann’s visually arresting Great Gatsby is a speed demon of embellished character. Brandishing narrative framework of a whittling Nick Carraway (Tobey MaMaguire) writing a novelization under guidance from psychiatric doctors, Gatsby’s superfluous lavishness and openly acknowledged anachronisms provide refreshed insight into this story of shallow American dreams.
