The Campaign

Sound & Vision Magazine
14 May 2013
  • Excerpt: While the jokes in The Campaign play way too broadly to exactly hold a mirror up to society, it’s not hard to see the underlying immutable truth behind the ruthless methodology in American politics and all the shady backroom shenanigans that go with it.

  • Excerpt: America loves a political blood bath. Sex, money, scandals, [insert word here]-gate; it all generates more results than, you know, doing stuff. It’s no surprise than that North Carolina voters eat up the manipulated feud between formerly unopposed Congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) and local Marty...

  • Summary: If it's sophistication you're looking for, forget it. This one's strictly for low laughs, at which it succeeds nicely.

  • Conclusion: Though timed closely to this year's presidential election both in theaters and on home video, The Campaign should hold up just fine for the indefinite future. But, the teaming of Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis made me hope for something more than "just fine.

The Campaign (2012)

27 October 2012
  • Conclusion: The Campaign won't get my vote for comedy of the year, that's for sure. But it does have an enviable lineup of laughs, a pair of memorable turns from Ferrell and Galifianakis, and even a few near-classic moments, which is more than I can say for most.

The Campaign

High-Def Digest
24 October 2012
  • Conclusion: Despite the seemingly fun pairing of Galifianakis and Ferrell, 'The Campaign' is a surprisingly uninspired and mundane comedy. The blend of broad political satire and goofy, raunchy humor leads to some decent laughs, but they're far too infrequent, and too many of the jokes feel like recycled bits...

  • Excerpt: Do you know why I hate politics, particularly in America? Politicians.  That’s why.  Seriously, have we ever had an elected official that’s ever, well, told the truth about anything?  I kind of doubt it.  And the sheer fascination that some people have with politics is almost as sickening to me.

  • Excerpt: Stephen Colbert is probably America's best chronicler of the terrifying goofiness of our political system, but Jay Roach is surely a close second. Known for a career of broad comedies like Meet the Parents , Roach turned to HBO to direct two films about true, important but also patently ridiculous...

  • Summary: The comedic one-upmanship between Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis results in a raunchy political comedy that's also insightful almost in spite of itself.
