Soul Men

ComingSoon
17 October 2013
  • Excerpt: Once upon a time The Real Deal were the kings of Mo-Town with the world at their feet, which is usually when everything falls apart. While lead singer Marcus Hooks (John Legend) departs the group for a successful solo career, things don't work out quite so well for backup singer/songwriters Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Bernie Mac) who quickly find life passing them by.

  • Excerpt: Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Bernie Mac) were backup singers to one of 60s soul’s hottest performers, only to embark on a path on their own. The road as a duo came to an end, as happens so often, over a woman. The two spent the next two decades ignoring each other, a once bright friendship snuffed out. When the singer they used to backup passes on, the two agree to appear at a reunion concert in his honor.

  • Excerpt: In a lot of ways Soul Men is the generic, subpar comedy that its title suggests. Few scenes go by without a dick or poop joke, the two leads (Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac) don't so much act together as shout one-liners over each others heads most of the time, and most of the plot turns can be seen coming as soon as a character steps onto the screen.

  • Summary: Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson deliver plenty of smiles, laughs, and (of course) soul in this welcome addition to the road movie canon.

  • Excerpt: It's a testament to the gravity and authority the late Bernie Mac brought to his roles that he manages to hold onto his battered dignity throughout an early scene in Soul Men , where he hits unexpected high notes as a doctor shoves fingers up his rectum. It's a painful gag on multiple levels. Sadly, that hackneyed bit is the rule rather than the exception in this dreadful comedy.

  • Conclusion: I am glad Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes lived long enough to finish this movie. It was a treat to ride with the guys while they were on their way to perform at the Apollo Theater. While there is nothing original or new about this story, it is delivered in a entertaining way that fans of Mac and Jackson are sure to enjoy. These guys made this story theirs, and it looks like they had a great time doing it.
