Summary: A violent mercenary fighting Spaniards in Africa for Queen Elizabeth I finds out his soul is bound for hell and barely escapes his sentence. Vowing a life of peace, Solomon Kane sticks to his path of redemption... that is until a brutal slaying of a family and the kidnapping of a young woman before his eyes has him back on the path of vengeance against the powerful sorcerer, Malachi. This movie is okay I mean it is not as bad as people say it is.
Summary: If you like action with a medieval twist (and some fantasy elements) - Solomon Kane is an excellent choice. There is plenty of sword action (and lots of decapitation) to go around and a fairly interesting story (though I found it a tad predictable myself) but James Purefoy does a good job as the titular character looking for redemption for his sins who turns to peace... only to have to resort back to violence to save his legacy.
Excerpt: A murderous pirate renounces his evil ways in the hope of saving his soul from damnation but is drawn back to his violent ways when an evil sorcerer's army invades the land. Solomon Kane reminded me of a Hammer Studios period chiller done in the style of The Lord Of The Rings. The medieval setting and religious imagery of something like The Witchfinder General combine with some bloody, rain and mud soaked battle sequences to create a believably grimy world of...
Excerpt: With a 16th century setting, Solomon Kane encounters the Devil’s reaper. After a year in England, he is vanquished from the monastery he is staying at. William and his family assist the injured Solomon who was robbed. Samuel, William’s son, was slain, is avenged by Solomon. William’s daughter Meredith was abducted by Malachi's henchmen. Its screenplay was effective with a few of my favorite lines: Father – “Every man must discover his own destiny.
Life's a bitch when your soul is owed to the devil.

Excerpt: Life's a bitch when your soul is owed to the devil. It's even more of a bitch when you're not even the guy who sold it off. But such is the sad state of affairs for Solomon Kane, the one-time bloodthirsty, amoral, treasure hunting sea captain prone to gunning down his own men for disobedience while spouting off inspirational lines about how he's the only devil his men have to fear when they quake in fright at the evil forces he keeps sending them against in the quest for...
Conclusion: Bassett is able to make a decent fist of the 17th century Puritan warrior despite having a very limited budget. The film looks great, Purefoy is convincing as the avenger with a conscience and the alternate-world medieval look is a striking mix of Lord of the Rings and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
