Excerpt: Bradley Cooper comes off as, at once, annoying, sympathetic, and thoroughly convincing: a tough combo, and exactly what his character demands. Jennifer Lawrence, who won an Oscar for her performance, is as appealing as any young actress since Deborah Winger or maybe Shirley MacLaine, with greater depth than the former, a harder edge than the latter, and more versatility than either.
REVIEW: Less-Than-Sterling 'Silver Linings Playbook' Shines During Messy Family Moments
13 May 2013
Excerpt: It speaks to just how good David O. Russell is at portraying raw, high-strung sincerity that Silver Linings Playbook is able to walk a line between likable and tolerable despite a premise the reeks of quirky bullshit. In addition to its frequently cutesy treatment of mental illness, the movie features a love interest who instantly latches onto and pursues the film's mess of a hero like she read the script in advance and was assured things will eventually work out.
Excerpt: Pat & Tiffany are meant for each other. Pat has been released from a Baltimore psychiatric hospital, and Tiffany likely belongs in one. Together, they form their individual cures by skirting their comfort zones and working through their mental disorders. Dysfunctional and at times unhinged, the two near-neighbors form a bond over their needs, while indirectly helping each other to heath.
Conclusion: 'Silver Linings Playbook' was my favorite film of 2012, and this Blu-ray release only reinforces my deep affection for it. Impeccably written, keenly directed, and acted to perfection by an esteemed cast, this sensitive, involving, romantic, and humorous salute to the human condition deserved every Oscar nomination it got, and should have won more awards.
Conclusion: As one of last year's best, most enjoyable, and most rewatchable films, Silver Linings Playbook would be easy to recommend in the most basic of platters. Gladly, it gets much more than that in a Blu-ray combo pack that provides fine picture and sound, a solid 95 minutes of bonus features, and all the versatility you could want. Set aside a couple centimeters of shelf space, because this set belongs in every home video collection.
Excerpt: Award season seems to bring about the best in the annual slew of films. Such is the case with Silver Linings Playbook , a film that nearly went overlooked by many but thanks to some high profile stars and a great script, this little “movie that could” is now one of my recent favorites. At face value, Silver Linings Playbook has everything it takes to make it successful: a great cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro just to name a few.
Conclusion: Silver Linings Playbook is a nearly perfect entertainment. The film is a bit too sanguine and facile in its endgame, but otherwise this is a superbly entertaining outing featuring unforgettable characters and some riveting performances. Director David O. Russell does a mostly flawless job here, though he occasionally resorts to clichés (do we really need a camera circling a couple engaging in their first kiss?).
