Excerpt: It’s amazing to me how one day a year can influence so much around the world. Granted this one day is Christmas and whatever your particular religion, it’s impossible to deny the influence of the 25th of December. Holiday movies have and will continue to be inspired by this day in early winter and one of the most timeless classics is “A Christmas Carol”; a novel by author Charles Dickens. In this novel we meet an elderly miser who has money, but not much more.
Conclusion: This is a funny movie that still manages to impart the life lessons that were a part of the original novel. Bill Murray and the rest of the cast are great in the movie and are well cast. The much improved video and audio quality of this Blu-ray make it easy to recommend purchasing it even if you already have the DVD. It just a shame that a movie this good is lacking special features which would have been very welcome.
Excerpt: The Film 'Tis the season to scarf up holiday fare. In addition to candy canes, cookies and a variety of other treats, now is the time to indulge in holiday Blu-ray cheer. You probably already have a few perennial favorites in your collection. Now, Paramount is releasing 1988's Scrooged in time to stuff a few stockings. Scrooged is obviously based on the classic Dickens tale, A Christmas Carol .
Conclusion: You won't get a single disparaging word on Scrooged from me. I love it as much as any movie and long for others to discover it and treasure it as I do. As for this Blu-ray, it'd be one thing if Scrooged just never got any real bonus features. But clearly, valuable extras were produced and compiled for the 2006 DVD that never was. To still not get them on this Blu-ray debut five years later is as unnerving as any home video issue.
Conclusion: Fantastical, quirky, and overall hilarious, 'Scrooged' is a wonderful and memorable modernization of Charles Dicken's classic tale of Christmas redemption. Starring Bill Murray and an excellent supporting cast, the comedy has grown into a favorite watch during the holiday season, adding an amusing edge to the festive cheer. Nearing its 25th anniversary, it remains just as funny as ever, full of energy and spirit for the whole family.
Conclusion: Scrooged is a fun little movie that mixes the new with the old while espousing the same basic principles as the tellings that have come before it. While the first act is demonstrably different from anything else in the A Christmas Carol universe, the picture settles into an air of familiarity once the ghosts show up. From there, the movie becomes linear and predictable in substance but not in style.
