Pompeii

  • Conclusion: Pompeii is a very bad movie that you nonetheless should have little difficulty enduring and maybe even enjoying in some guilty fashion. Clearly not intended for history or science buffs, it's turn-off-your-brain entertainment that despite an abundance of stupidity and unoriginality almost somehow works on some level.

  • Excerpt: You know nothing, Jon Snow. Like how to pick your first feature-length starring role. Paul W.S. Anderson continues his assault on audiences with Pompeii , a mindless and cheesy action movie that takes Gladiator and adds a volcano and bad dialogue into the equation. As far as Paul W.S. Anderson movies go, however, it could have been a lot worse.

Pompeii

BluRay Authority

  • Excerpt: It’s a well-known fact that when a movie comes to DVD or Blu-Ray and you could have just sworn that it was in theaters – it’s probably not that great of a movie.  Such is the case with Pompeii , a knock off of both Gladiator and Titanic (in a way) that tries to do what both of these movies did and failed miserably. Granted, the aforementioned two movies did win Best Picture and managed to rake in some cash as the same time.

  • Conclusion: When it's all said and done, Paul W.S. Anderson's 'Pompeii' is just another sword-and-sandal epic that only imagines classical empires by their gladiator sports and bloody battles to the death inside grand arenas. Blending the plots of 'Gladiator' and 'Titanic' for a rather dull and generic storyline, the movie's real success is its concluding second half with larger-than-life, grandiose spectacles of destruction and mayhem.

Pompeii (Blu-ray Review)

  • Conclusion: Anderson has never been one for redefining the genre. The man makes films he wants to see on the screen and on his own terms. Do they work on a snobby and intellectual level? No. Do they entertain? Hell yes they do. Pompeii is no different than any of his other films. I did like it less than the severely ignored Three Musketeers. I did enjoy the spectacle of it all as the action and special effects was all top notch.

Pompeii 3D (Blu-ray)

DVD Verdict
20 May 2014
  • Excerpt: We've all seen the photos in those Scholastic books from third grade: the hapless residents of the fabled city of Pompeii, forever calcified as relics of the monster of from Mount Vesuvius hundreds of years ago. Now, finally, we get to see what these people were like before they were flash-frozen in ash…and they're not that much different to tell you the truth. It's 79 AD and the city of Pompeii is one of the go-to places in the Roman Empire.

  • Conclusion: I wanted to like Paul W.S. Anderson's Pompeii , but the director insists on boring the audience with a Gladiator -knockoff story and dull melodrama before finally letting his angry volcano loose. This eruption is too little too late for this cheesy film, which fails to impressive with action, drama or visual effects. A talented cast is largely wasted, and Anderson does not provide much entertainment here.

Pompeii 3D Blu-ray Review

blu-ray.com
16 May 2014
  • Summary: Pompeii takes the sword-and-sandal film and reshapes it with the added entertainment value of the classic disaster epic, in essence meshing Spartacus with 2012 . The mixed bag mix-and-match of genres produces an equally mixed bag end product. Director Paul W.S. Anderson -- the man behind the Resident Evil films -- turns his attention away from mutated monsters and zombies and towards the end of the world for a few unlucky Romans and gladiatorial slaves who met their...
