Excerpt: I have personally seen all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. We have not had time to work reviews of them in. When an opportunity presented itself to review Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides on Blu-ray and DVD, we decided it was time to get our feet wet. Johnny Depp plays Captain Jack Sparrow. He is a pirate, a scoundrel, but seems to have a good heart. He schemes something fierce and he normally comes out smelling like roses.
Excerpt: I’m consistently amazed at the entire “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. I mean, look at it. We’ve got four movies that have grossed and merchandised billions of dollars over the last several years and it’s all stemmed from a ride at a Disney theme park. I say again – amazing. Odds are that if you’ve, well, been alive the past decade you’ve no doubt heard of Johnny Depp and the aforementioned “Pirates of the Carribean” films.
REVIEW: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is Both Good-Natured and Exhausting
29 December 2011
Excerpt: Rob Marshall's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the most modest picture in the Pirates franchise since the 2003 Curse of the Black Pearl -- which doesn't mean it's necessarily modest. On Stranger Tides , shot in 3-D, offers more muted special effects, more swashbuckling and swordplay and perhaps fewer needless plot twists than either the 2006 Dead Man's Chest or the 2007 At World's End .

Summary: There is all of the high-seas adventure that you loved so much in the first film. Depp demands attention and pays dividends for your notice. He’s settled in much more, and I actually found the character a bit less flamboyant than in previous films. Jack has matured a little, and it bodes well for the series. That doesn’t mean all of the charm and wit have been stripped away. Rather, it’s all the more effective this time around.
Excerpt: 3D conversions are all the rage in Hollywood, but thankfully this isn't one of them and it shows from the outset while Jack is loose on the streets of London. Detail is excellent in both foregrounds and backgrounds and separation between objects adds a lot of depth to the image. But as good as the 3D is, it's the DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack that's the star of the show. It features plenty of discrete effects, strong bass response, and virtually unlimited dynamic range.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D/2D (Blu-ray Review)

Conclusion: If the last two Pirates movies were a little too much for you, then you will probably like this one since it’s a throwback to the first film’s straightforward narrative. Johnny Depp, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, and the rest of the cast all do a fine job in their roles, but Depp’s Jack Sparrow is always the highlight of these films, and he doesn’t disappoint here.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Review
19 October 2011
Excerpt: It seems the writing crew of the Pirates franchise has learned little from the clustered At World’s End . Stranger Tides sort of rolls over and dies once it begins expanding its roster, the titular Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) the golden goose of this franchise, also its only remaining spark.
Conclusion: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides cannot be charged with simply giving us more of the same, but it also can't be credited with breathing new life into a franchise that has overstayed its welcome. When a movie like this can make $1 billion at the global box office in spite of critical drubbing and muted public sentiment, Disney, Johnny Depp, and the film industry at large have little reason to try being new and original.

But before long, the law-breaking, seafaring rogue is caught up in a three-way race for the mystical waters, shadowed by well-funded British and Spanish royal expeditions.
