Summary: Not many movie-makers do parodies better than Joe Dante – the director who brought us The Howling (a werewolf movie parody), Gremlins (a monster movie parody), Innerspace (a Fantastic Voyage parody), The 'Burbs (a neighbours-from-hell parody) and Piranha (a Jaws parody). This 1978 comedy-horror is one of Dante's early movies, but despite that he shows an assured touch and gets generously tongue-in-cheek performances from his cast of horror veterans.
Conclusion: I loved the original Piranha when Joe Dante brought terror and laughs when the big hole was left by Jaws (until the fairly good sequel Jaws 2 was released in the same year) The mixture of blood, boobs and fish became an instant classic. After that any movies about Piranha were (if you pardon the expression) dead in the water. Fast forward to 2010 and Alex Aja brings the fun and terror back and it was an instant success as well as bringing the fun back to 3D too.
Conclusion: I will start by saying I hated the first film. I thought it was a soft core adult film with a few fish in places. So when I was forcibly dragged to this, I wanted to take my iPod or a book. To be fair, this one doesn't set out to be anything other than boobs, gore and....boobs... It's actually got some laugh out loud bits. The parts with David hasselhoff especially. Do they justify seeing it?
Summary: Totally gruesome - and totally hilarious gore-fest. Typical Hollywood morality appiles, where the "bad" girls and boys get munched to bits (the pornographer guy gets his very appropriate end!) and the "good" guys get scared witless and occasionally nibbled, but otherwise emerge unscathed. Very much in the them of the original "Jaws" - even with Richard Dreyfuss in a cameo role!
