  • Excerpt: Hollywood gets reamed continually as a bastion of liberalism, which just goes to show how little some people pay attention. Hollywood is about as conservative a place as you will ever find, all the conspicuous consumption aside. The reality is there is nothing, nothing, that Hollywood likes better than a nice, safe formula--preferably one that someone else has tried and proved is risk free--that it can follow step-by-step and insure that it is going to get exactly what...

  • Excerpt: "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" actually exceeded expectations and was an enjoyable film. The inclusion of Greek mythology into modern settings made it fun and exciting. Cool visual effects for Medusa, the Hydra, and Hades will enthrall moviegoers both young and not-so-young.

  • Excerpt: Hollywood's haste and pressure to manufacture blockbuster franchises have resulted in some spectacular landmarks ( Twilight , Transformers ) and duds ( Speed Racer , The Incredible Hulk -- twice) of late. But it has rarely allowed for a genuine curio like Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief , the first of what Fox hopes will be at least five adaptations of Rick Riordan's hit kid-lit series. I say why not?

  • Excerpt: The Movie From Hollywood's vantage point, the trouble with ancient Greek mythology is that it's, well, really old. And that's largely why Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief feels so tired: the heard-it-in-high-school tales of the gods, coupled with another teenager coming-of-age adventure, plus the now clichéd "Whoa, this is too much to handle!" vibe.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Review

  • Excerpt: Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is an ordinary kid. He doesn’t like his stepfather, and is suddenly whisked away to a mystical, secluded school for “gifted” students. Roaming the lands are mystical creatures he must battle in an effort to save the world. Huh… It’s about this point where you expect one of the main characters to pop on screen and state (with a slight British accent), “You’re a demigod Percy!

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Blu-ray Review

  • Conclusion: Percy Jackson is solid young adult entertainment—it's got gods, heroes, and a great premise— but I don't think it will start a franchise, let alone go head to head with Harry Potter . While the action is intense and the characters are likeable, the magic just isn't there. Still, The Lightening Thief works well as a standalone movie, which is good considering that we probably won't be returning to this cinematic world.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

  • Conclusion: 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief' doesn't come close to the subtle cleverness that was found in Riordan's books. Yes, I know that the book and movie are completely different entities, but why not incorporate more of Riordan's clever material into the movie? For example, it was hilarious that the gate to hell was located in a music studio in the book, why is it given such a generic twist in the movie? Oh well.

  • Summary: An interesting take on the young hero saga, made eye-rollingly tedious by the ham-handed direction of Chris Columbus.

  • Excerpt: Surely somewhere out there, there are fans of the first two Harry Potter movies who were bereft when Chris Columbus didn’t go on to direct subsequent entries in the franchise. Those few jilted fans can now line up for their methadone in the form of Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief , a kids’-book adaptation that follows the J.K. Rowling formula closely enough to ease the pangs of forlorn Harry Potter fans in general.
