Pain & Gain: Special Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray)

upcomingdiscs.com
5 December 2013
  • Summary: Bay has always been accused of making dumb action films that felt like they were pumped full of steroids. I never expected the film that was literally about dumb guys who are on steroids to be his wittiest effort to date.

Pain & Gain (2013)

  • Conclusion: Pain & Gain is a fine, underrated film in the Michael Bay canon. It tells an endlessly fascinating story of greed, tragedy, physical perfection, and mental corruptness, made whole by excellent acting and keen filmmaking. The initial Blu-ray release was absent supplements. This disc remedies that oversight, but there's no reason this couldn't have been the one and only release.

  • Conclusion: Double dipping on Pain & Gain so soon after its initial barebones release is no doubt going to sting for those who plunked down their hard earned cash on that first offering from Paramount. This new re-issue offers up great sound and video quality and handily trumps that older release in the extras department by offering up some interesting and entertaining supplemental material. The movie itself?

Pain & Gain

Slant Magazine
3 October 2013
  • Excerpt: Has Michael Bay acquired self-consciousness? That's the question raised, if never convincingly answered, by Pain & Gain , an outrageous based-on-real-life tale that's perfectly suited to the director's insanely overblown stylistic and thematic temperament. Rife with racism, homophobia, and anti-Semitism, and infatuated with superficial beauty, physical strength, wealth, and military might, it's the perfect encapsulation of Bay's favorite things, a rollicking, repugnant,...

Pain & Gain Blu-ray Review

DoBlu
13 August 2013
  • Excerpt: It is isn’t until Dwayne Johnson is spotted outdoors, barbequing severed hands in sprightly Miami Beach sunshine, that Pain & Gain reminds audiences this is still a true story. From late 1994 into mid 1995, three muscle heads perpetrated a scam involving extravagant fraud, and as desperation set in, despicable murder which led to dual death row stays. Pain & Gain’s true story is absolutely wacky.

BluRay Authority

  • Excerpt: 2013 has been a really good year for both Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  Yes I realize that he really doesn’t go by “The Rock” anymore, but I think someone with the audacity to refer to themselves as such a thing should never live it down.  Hey, I love “The Rock”, he’s probably one of my favorite actors. And as I mentioned, it’s been a really good year for him with starring roles in Snitch , G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Fast and Furious 6 to name just a few.

Pain & Gain (Blu-ray Review)

whysoblu.com

  • Excerpt: Pain & Gain is another one of those films in 2013 where try as I might, I just never made it to in the theater and therefore I have been waiting ever since its April theatrical release to check it out on the Blu-ray format.  Obviously, that day has finally come!  Hooray!  Thank you Paramount!
