Pacific Rim

  • Excerpt: Guillermo del Toro's new film is very much the product of a vivid imagination, though one that wouldn't have been possible without an enormous financial investment. Watching this intriguing but overstuffed vision, of man-powered robots doing battle with alien creatures that slip into our world via a breach somewhere beneath the Pacific Ocean, I was reminded of all the times I used to step into my cousin's basement-cum-playroom and beheld, with a mixture of revulsion and...

  • Excerpt: I remember seeing trailers for Pacific Rim in the late Spring.  It seemed, to me anyway, that this was Warner’s event movie of the year and I wasn’t that interested.  I looked at the box office numbers, as I do every week, and saw that it did well but not that well.  I figured it wouldn’t be long before I got my Blu-Ray and I’d be the judge.

  • Excerpt: If ever there was a movie that could transport me back to my nine-year-old self and ignite my imagination it was Guillermo del Toro's massive sci-fi bonanza, Pacific Rim . Then again, I don't know how fun it would be to be nine again, because…you know, school sucks. Earth is under attack. Towering alien monsters called Kaiju are pouring through an inter-dimensional rift deep within the Pacific Ocean.

  • Conclusion: Pacific Rim . With that said, Warner Bros.' Blu-ray combo pack swings for the fences, serving up a reference quality A/V presentation and a nice assortment of special features...and just a few short months after its theatrical run, too. It's Recommended for those who don't mind eye candy with extra cheese. What Do You Think?

  • Conclusion: So you say your life is boring?  You say you want to have a fun time, but epic in the same token?  Well you’re in luck.  No, I’m not here to sell you drugs.  I’m here to sell you on Pacific Rim .  It’s the tale of a washed up pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed together to take a stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.  It’s what dreams and your childhood are made of.

  • Excerpt: Inter-dimensional aliens deposit gratuitous giant monsters onto Earth’s surface, facing off against the preposterous arsenal of mankind’s technical acuity: Robotic Jaegers. Monuments to the absurd, these metal goliaths enter fisticuffs of record setting scale against these otherworldly beasties known as kaiju.

  • Excerpt: Money hasn’t changed Guillermo Del Toro, it’s just increased the size of his sandbox. With Pacific Rim , the director of Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies has mounted his first bona-fide blockbuster, in which human-controlled robots wage war on an invading army of God-sized monsters.

  • Summary: Justifiably proud of a ridiculously awesome premise, Pacific Rim lovingly embraces its blockbuster status, clichés and all - refreshingly without any post-modern nonsense, knowing winks at the audience or ounce of satire. The film does exactly what it says on its ludicrously oversized walking tin: giant robots looking cool while pummelling the crap out of massive monsters.
