Monsters University 3D Blu-ray Review

DoBlu

  • Excerpt: Monsters University shows how ingrained scaring was to the monster world. Their economy, their entertainment, and their schools all flash awe toward the artistic merit of frightening small children. Monsters Inc. however merely showed us the business equation. Knowing this, the upheaval caused by Mike & Sully at the end of Monsters Inc. would have thrown their world into total anarchy. Schools would trash curriculum based on scaring.

  • Conclusion: While it has the foundation of a Saturday morning cartoon spin-off, Monsters University tries to make a go as a respectable Pixar feature. Though short on ambition, it delivers an always agreeable but never special outing. There are more than enough creative sequences and the film is at least twenty minutes longer than it needs to be. Still, it's a fun time, which proves that a relatable G-rated version of college life is doable.

Monsters University - 3D: Ultimate Collector's Edition

High-Def Digest

  • Conclusion: 'Monsters University' is an engaging and funny prequel that doesn't quite live up to the original 'Monsters, Inc.'. However, I found myself opening up to the film upon multiple viewings. There are tons of gags and references and details to enjoy, along with likable characters. Our readers who have young kids -- kids who didn't exist when the first film came out -- will no doubt have this movie on repeat for years to come.

  • Excerpt: A college-centric prequel to Monsters Inc. , Monsters University is unfortunate proof that the animation studio previously known for its brains is now resting a little too heavily on its nominal brawn. Monsters Inc. 's success came from the imaginative land of Monstropolis, evoking a sense of place through quotidian and nuanced details of urban life and an industrial workplace.

  • Excerpt: On his entry into Monsters University, Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) only wants one thing… to be a great Scarer. His dreams and studies come to a grinding halt when he gets into a conflict with MU's "legacy Scarer" James T. Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) and both of them get themselves expelled from the Scaring program.

  • Excerpt: Of all the fictional worlds that Pixar has created, the one of Monsters Inc. may be the most vibrant and rife with potential for other stories. No, we didn't really need to see how Mike and Sully became friends in college, or how Mike learned to overcome his naturally un-scary appearances, but in Monsters University a slim plot and excuse to sell more toys is also a welcome return trip to a world that we missed more than we might have thought.

  • Excerpt: The Golden Age of Pixar may be over—for this reviewer, it ended with Up —but even the studio’s second-tier work is transporting. In Monsters University , an army of mouse-click magicians rewind the clock on one of their most popular properties, taking audiences back to the wild salad days of a fast-talking cyclops and his furry, gentle-giant companion.
