Excerpt: Arnold Schwarzenegger is swarmed by kids who steal his starring role in this hokey and colorful escapade which finds the Austrian bodybuilder undercover as a kindergarten teacher. Conceptually, it seems too unbelievable for fake movie trailers on a sketch comedy program. In execution, Kindergarten Cop is stupidly successful. It must be Ivan Reitman, fresh off his stint behind the camera in Ghostbusters II , directing Schwarzenegger to play up as often as he’s down.
Conclusion: Kindergarten Cop is nothing less than great entertainment. It captures the very essence of the simple, feel-good story, here blended together with a bit of action and an edge that works surprising well against the comedy, nearly as well as the juxtaposition that is "bodybuilder teaches kindergarten." It's great fun, one of the most quotable films of the 1990s, and holds up incredibly well almost a quarter-century after its release (oh, my, how time really does fly...).
Excerpt: “It’s not a tum-ah!” The 1990’s ushered in a new era for Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 80’s were very good to him and after establishing himself as one of the premiere action stars of said decade, it was time for a change. Arnold was the face of films like Red Sonja , Conan the Barbarian , The Terminator and Commando , but with Ivan Reitman’s Kindergarten Cop , he showed a softer and gentler side.
