Katy Perry: Part of Me

High-Def Digest

  • Conclusion: You don't have to be a fan of Katy Perry or her music to enjoy 'Part of Me.' This is a well-made documentary that shows how hard one person has worked to make her career a success. It also shows how hard she worked on her uneven marriage, which we all know resulted in divorce. Despite the marital devastation, she managed to work through it and not cancel a single show in her tour. If Katy Perry was inspirational prior to this film, she is only even more so now.

  • Conclusion: Though Katy Perry doesn't seem especially worthy of a theatrical documentary, Part of Me proves to be more compelling than expected, based on her relatively slow rise to success and the personal drama captured in her California Dreams Tour. Those simply wanting high quality versions of Perry's flamboyant concert performances of catchy, tolerable pop may be disappointed to find them buried in an inspirational biography, but that design yields more substance and filmic...

DVD Verdict
22 September 2012
  • Excerpt: Katy Perry seemingly went from unknown singer to overnight superstar faster than you can say "I kissed a girl and I liked it." The one-time religious singer has become one of the hottest musicians on the planet, selling out stadium sized tours and reveling in a stage persona that's one part sugar and one part spice.

Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D Blu-ray Review

19 September 2012
  • Summary: It's OK to express yourself. It seems that in today's music there are two keys to success: transformation and saturation. Artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga go from girl next door to girl next planet, all in the name of being themselves, of course. They're ingrained into popular culture the minute a song rises up the charts with a flood of tweets, website hits, and television appearances. It's all about mass media saturation.

  • Excerpt: I must admit, before seeing Katy Perry: Part of Me , the pop princess with the candy-coated cleavage was on the periphery of my pop culture intake. Sure, I'd see some of her goofy and glittery music videos online, read about her Sesame Street scandal and cheeky response on Saturday Night Live , was aware of her short-lived marriage to crass comedian Russell Brand and had certainly sung along to her most popular singles at karaoke.

Katy Perry: Part Of Me

AV Club
5 July 2012
  • Excerpt: There’s a scene toward the end of Katy Perry: Part Of Me where the singer is faced with the decision to cancel her show in São Paulo, Brazil, or go onstage in spite of the fact that her short-lived marriage to comedian Russell Brand has just imploded. The Perry of this scene stands in stark contrast to the figure the film has touted up to this point, a neon-hued goofball just oozing charisma and charm who asks, without irony, “How can you ever be too cartoony?
