The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition)

DVD Talk
17 November 2013
  • Conclusion: This definitive Blu-ray release for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey easily earns my highest recommendation: . The film, presented here with thirteen minutes of additional footage, is a largely rapturous adventure that sees director Peter Jackson take the reins of another Middle-Earth adventure. The Extended Cut additions are relatively minor, but this is the version I will be revisiting in the future.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Blu-ray) Extended Edition

DVD Verdict
5 November 2013
  • Excerpt: Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ) is a good-natured hobbit who enjoys his peaceful, simple existence. Alas, his tidy world is thrown into chaos when the great wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellan, X-Men ) invites him to come on a grand adventure. In no time at all, Bilbo finds himself joining forces with a rowdy band of dwarves led by the serious-minded Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage, Robin Hood ).

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Version

BluRay Authority
3 November 2013
  • Excerpt: After being stuck in production hell for several years, The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey finally arrived in theaters Christmas 2012, and was a huge success. The issues included legal issues with MGM, director Guillermo Del Toro dropping out and constant delays. Peter Jackson once again, returns as director here. His The Lord of The Rings films were all very successful, so it was good to have him back on board. It adds consistency in the direction and storytelling.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition (Blu-ray Review)

whysoblu.com
2 November 2013
  • Conclusion: Let’s face it, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is not the most thrilling of action movies.  There’s nothing here you haven’t seen before here.  But oh boy, does it feel great to be back in this universe on the Blu-ray format.  I can’t argue that.  And while there’s really no reason at all to have an Extended Edition of this film, the real treasure here are the 9 hours of supplemental features, not the film itself, in my opinion.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D Blu-ray Review

blu-ray.com
1 November 2013
  • Summary: If you thought The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was a divisive 169-minute return to Middle-Earth, just wait until fans sink their teeth into filmmaker Peter Jackson's 183-minute extended cut. The theatrical version has already been criticized ad nauseum for being too long, too bloated, too ungainly, too action-oriented... on and on and on. And to be fair, each point has some merit.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Sound & Vision Magazine
5 September 2013
  • Excerpt: Crafted in 3D by a master, Hobbit was shot digitally, notoriously at 48 frames per second, but the results are warm, organic, and absolutely stunning on Blu-ray. The movie is split onto two movie-only Blu-ray 3D platters to assure optimal quality, and the ambitious scope shines through in the flawless detail, celebrating Gandalf’s every facial hair and Bilbo’s enormous pores.
