  • Excerpt: It's a bit of a disappointment unfortunately. A brilliantly created and beautifully looking one to be sure, but one that's ultimately less than the sum of its parts.

Rock! Shock! Pop!
2 June 2012
  • Excerpt: from the printed comic book page to the silver screen proved a success, it came as a surprise to no one that a sequel would soon follow. Hellboy and his fellow members of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Development (or, B.P.R.D. for short) had plenty of adventures in the comics that inspired the film so it only made sense to make a second film and thankfully del Toro and star Ron Pearlman, in the role he was born to play, were brought back on board.

OgreCave

  • Excerpt: Directed by Guillermo del Toro Dark Horse Entertainment Universal Pictures Opening July 11, 2008It must've been a hard sell, originally. "He's a demon raised among humans, and he fights alongside other outcasts against evil forces from beyond. Oh, and his name's Hellboy." But thousands of comic book fans knew him for the gem he was, and now that the movie-going public is aware of the irritable, cigar-puffing demon-turned-hero, a sequel was inevitable.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

High-Def Digest
23 November 2008
  • Conclusion: 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' is a decided step down from the first, much more entertaining 'Hellboy'. However, it does still feature enough of Guillermo del Toro's unique visionary touches to rate a recommendation. Helping things greatly are the Blu-ray's very nice video, audio, and bountiful assortment of bonus features.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army Blu-ray Review

blu-ray.com
16 November 2008
  • Conclusion: Hellboy II: The Golden Army is an entertaining film that accomplishes everything a good sequel requires. It enhances the characters on a psychological level, introduces one or two new primaries, features bigger and bolder sets, more intense action, and introduces a formidable opponent for the heroes to battle.

Sound & Vision Magazine
10 November 2008
  • Excerpt: The subject matter isn't really my cup of tea, but the imaginative director Guillermo Del Toro delivers one hell of a ride. The well-conceived screenplay has a fair amount of humor, which thankfully kept me involved until the bombastic third act, which is over the top but delivers a satisfying conclusion.
