Excerpt: There is a lot to admire in Heaven's Gate. In fact, much of what Cimino got right in The Deer Hunter, he once again mastered in this film. (e.g. cinematography, attention to detail, an even better score.

Excerpt: This edition is not only beautiful but filled with very insightful extras. The most notable is the very interesting and enriching interview with Michael Cimino and the original script for shooting the movie.
Unbelievable, Unconventional Western- Not to Be Missed in Director's C

Excerpt: A breathtaking western epic for the ages in Director's Cut form. No wonder Criterion must have been chomping at the bit to take this project. I can't even imagine how awful this film must have been with the original butcher job the studio put to it back in 1980.

Excerpt: Serious Criterion user here. I have been viewing the movies since the 1950s. Don't want to drop movie names. I have not missed too much, but I missed this. I just did not pay attention. I was very busy in 1980s.
Excerpt: I've been a fan of Heaven's Gate since I first saw it on VHS. I bought the DVD and now the Blu-ray. I think people's assessment of DVDs are a little tainted, for when people write that the Blu-ray is much better than the DVD, that's mainly because they are comparing Blu-ray to an upsampled DVD...
Conclusion: A giant of the western genre now finally restored to Michael Ciminos satisfaction and presented in HD sadly the transfer is a muddy sepia in sections (particularly for the first half) and it ages the film with musical aspects similar to The Deer Hunter being strummed throughout.
