Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011)

  • Conclusion: I felt as if Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close were pulling me through the crowded streets of New York City in the weeks following 9/11, whispering cry, cry, cry as it yanked me along. But I didn't need to be dragged, kicking and screaming. Such profound tragedy and loss speaks volumes without any help, and all but demands a deep emotional reaction.

BluRay Authority

  • Excerpt: September 11, 2001 changed the face of this country forever and affected everyone (some more so than others). It’s now passed the ten year anniversary, though I’m sure that some remember it like it was yesterday. I won’t sit here and rehash my personal story – we’ve all got them. There are so many “what if’s” that it’ll drive a person crazy trying to figure out and comprehend what the events of that day really meant. Surreal? You bet.

  • Excerpt: One of the many reasons Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close earned so much praised when it was published in 2005 was its inherent literary power. Using tricks (some would say gimmicks) like color pages, illustrations and even blank pages, the novel was able to dig deeper into its multi-layered narrative about grief and recovery in the wake of a tragedy.

  • Excerpt: In the aftermath of 9/11, the question arose of when it would be appropriate for popular art to address the events head-on. For a national tragedy of that magnitude, when would it not be “too soon”? Yet Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close , an appalling adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer ’s novel , suggests that maybe that’s the wrong question.

  • Summary: Despite it being more than a decade since 9/11, this is the first Hollywood film, bar Adam Sandler’s little-seen Reign Over Me and The Dixie Chicks' Shut Up and Sing documentary, to deal with the emotional fallout from that fateful day. And with a skilled line-up that includes Stephen Daldry ( Billy Elliot , The Reader ) barking the orders, veteran screenwriter Roth and a star-studded cast that includes Hanks, Bullock and an excellent Von Sydow this should have been an...

  • Conclusion: It’s just too tempting to dismiss it as extremely long and incredibly disappointing. It’s challenging, divisive and has moments of beauty but leaves you cold.
