  • Excerpt: Actually, that's not true. No one liked "Ferngully." Which is probably why no one cared when prolific animator/illustrator William Joyce ("Robots," "Rise of the Guardians") developed an extremely similar plot for his children's book "The Leaf Men," the basis of 20th Century Fox's new film "Epic.

Epic (Blu-ray)

DVD Verdict

  • Excerpt: It's a pretty daring move, naming your film Epic . With that title, you're setting up serious audience expectations. Just what does it mean, though, for a story to truly be an epic? Opinions vary, of course, but to me it means a vast scale, both in terms of visuals and in emotion, and the sense that you've gone on a great journey by the time it is over. An epic has a transformative effect not just on the characters, but on the audience as well.

EPIC (Blu-ray Review)

  • Conclusion: With outstanding technical specs, an enjoyable story and some educational extras to boot, you can’t go wrong with Epic on Blu-ray.  There is some animated violence which may not be for the really young kids, but for the most part, it’s a film for the whole family. Epic proves to be visually stunning with a very impressive display of sound, and let’s not forget, just a really good movie in itself.  This is one movie definitely worth adding to your library.

Epic (Blu-ray)

  • Summary: This past summer, the box office was crowded with high-profile family film offerings. Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University hit, while Turbo was somewhat of a misfire. Meanwhile, Epic sort of slipped in under the radar (to the extent a movie that grossed $100 million in the U.S. and topped $250 million worldwide can slip in under the radar).

  • Conclusion: Because the trailers for 'Epic' made it out to be a mish-mash of other family films, I literally expected nothing from it when I popped in the Blu-ray. Much to my surprise, I found it to be quite enjoyable and much better than the most of this summer's other family films. My daughters joined me for my second viewing (the 2D disc) and both enjoyed it from beginning to end. The story of 'Epic' isn't the most unique, but it also isn't without its creative charm.

  • Conclusion: Epic may serve as a nice distraction for your children when you put them in front of the television and leave for an hour and a half, but if you find yourself sitting down to watch it, there just is not a lot of entertainment there to keep you engaged through the film. Technically it looks and sounds great, but from a bonus material perspective brings things neither new nor entertaining to sit down and watch.

Epic 3D Blu-ray Review

DoBlu
21 August 2013
  • Excerpt: Despite fittings of lively, leafy greens and narrative structure detailing miniature forest protectors, Blue Sky’s Epic chooses to disengage from familiar – even tired – global warming messaging for spirited “appreciate what you have” themes. Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried) is reinserted into her quirky, pixie-chasing father’s life after divorce and death of her mother.

Epic 3D Blu-ray Review

blu-ray.com
21 August 2013
  • Summary: The title of Blue Sky Studios' latest animated film seems to be both ironic and sincere, the former because Epic is concerned with an incredibly small-scale view—it stars little woodland creatures and a race of tiny, fairy-like humans—and the latter because the film tries to mount a large-scale action-adventure that pits the forces of leafy-green goodness against the minions of rot and decay.
