Summary: Decent movie, entertaining, Matt Damon is very good in it but there a few things about the story line that were frustrating. Had potential to be a brilliant movie otherwise but some things were a bit too convenient and and one or two bits that were just unnecessary. Overall I liked it though, just a shame coz it could have been epic.
Summary: Was looking forward to seeing this, as I'm a big Jodie Foster fan, and usually like Matt Damon. Sadly, I thought it was awful. It's highly derivative of about 5 other iconic sci-fi films (all from the 80s), and is comprised almost completely of swearing and gory violence. The characters are shallow, and even though the director 'tries' to make you feel something for them, you really don't care.
Excerpt: Then you don't really need to see Elysium. But Elysium goes even furthet than District 9. It has gone in search of every human/social failing and thrown them all up there on the screen. It's quite overwhelming, and I felt that it severely detracted from the movie. When I watch a movie I want to be entertained, not preached at. Elysium is a non-stop sermon which left me not caring about any of the 'serious' issues it was trying to surreptitiously enlighten me about.
Summary: OK action and special effects. This plot has been done to death over the years; 'the people up there are in luxury whilst we slave below. If only a hero would come and save us' etc. Sadly, instead of an intelligent take on this, it just becomes the usual bells and whistles finale with an insane baddie having a scrap with the good guy. This is nowhere as intriguing as District 9.
Summary: My title says it all, Matt Damon was the person who drew me to this film as he's an a star celeb who tends to choose his films carefully, howerever.. The film had great special effects and...and..well that was about it really. The storyline seemed very weak, with a very anti-climatic ending and I think if it didn't have an A star lister like Matt Damon I dont think I wouldn't of looked at it twice. On the whole....Rather boring!!
Summary: Very disappointing film. I felt the story was excellent to begin with but then it just went off on a tangent. I was expecting more of it to be about actual Elysium. It was unengaging, the characters were not memorable or likeable. The contraption fitted to Matt Damon looked unrealistic and quite ridiculous. Such a shame as it was hyped up to be something it isn't.
Summary: Well now, heres the rub. Its a difficult film to sum up. The photography and effect are first rate, however it is let down in some crucial areas. Matt Damon is a tad unconvincing in the lead role and Jodie Fosters upper crust english accent fails to help - I almost thought it was dubbed or post synced.
Summary: Unfortunately, because of the unexpected success of District 9 and the obviously much bigger budget he was given for Elysium, Neill Blomkamp will have to put up with comparisons between the two. This is a pity, because each has its strengths and weaknesses and, at the end of the day, are completely different. Commonality exists primarily because both are political dramas, despite the sci-fi settings.
