Summary: Johnny depp in a Tim Burton movie well nothing new here.Tim Burton's dark shadows. so after watching the movie I felt I was in Tin Burton land you know everything is dark and weird.the movie was just not that funny some parts in the movie was kind of funny and that's it.
Excerpt: Having never seen any of the original incarnations of the iconic series or earlier films, I went in with an open mind. The movie itself is a bit mixed with horror/drama & comedy which is usually hard to pull off but Depp is in top form, Michele Pfeiffer eats up her scenes each time she's in one and the rest of the cast carries the story well. The tongue in cheek humor is spot on if you catch them and the antics are nothing original but fun nonetheless.
Excerpt: With a perfect cast, perfect characters, and perfect and exciting trailer what could have gone wrong? Well sadly, everything. Dark shadows is very hard to follow. Half the time, you don't even know what's going on . I don't think the characters do either. It is full of filler/fluff and way to much is going on at the same time.It is a train wreck. The set up and intro was great, but after that it went downhill.
Summary: Cassavettes likes making movies about Losers but Losers can be more interesting than the rest of us. Why does he not try to tell a story with his films. It is said that Cassavettes is a fan of Goddard. It is time he studied more French Cinema and made his films entertaining. It is sad when the musical score is more interesting than the film itself.
A visually superlative mess of a movie with its hits and misses.

Excerpt: I'm not a big fan of soap operas but the original Dark Shadows series sounded really interesting given it's about vampires and witches in 1960's-1970's. My mom grew up with the show while I didn't know anything about it except that it's a dark, cheesy, dramatic, atmospheric series that stands above most of the generic soups. I recently watched 20+ episodes of Dark Shadows and that made watching Burton's take more enjoyable.
Excerpt: Synopsis: Two hundred years after being locked in a coffin by a jealous witch, the vampire Barnabas Collins returns to restore his family's good name and fortune, to settle an old score and to reunite with his long-lost love. Comments: Although it had potential, this movie tried to be too many things at once - black comedy, slapstick, romance, drama, light horror - but managed not to deliver on any of them particularly well. Pity.
Burton and Depp create a nice atmosphere, just not smart second half

Excerpt: The combination of gothic horror, stylistic cinematography, cool music and humor work, but they should of tapered back the humor in the second half. The film halfway through seems to struggle with its identity because its not sure where its going. I feel the over wrought silly monster mash humor unravels the film in the second half.
