Dan in Real Life

BluRay Authority

  • Excerpt: Over the past few years, I’ve become a big fan of Steve Carell. I saw him briefly on some segments of “The Daily Show” and after I saw him in “Anchorman” and “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” I figured that we’d be seeing much more of him. As it turns out, that’s a good thing and when I saw his performance in “Little Miss Sunshine” I knew this guy would be around for a while. Carell seems to have a very dry wit and doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously.

  • Excerpt: Dan ( Steve Carell ) is a semi-successful writer with three daughters. His wife died four years before the film begins. Dan comes from a big family who are impossibly close and endlessly cheerful, and who have a big house in rural Rhode Island. Dan is still far from having emotionally healed from the death of his wife, and although he is doing a good job at being a dad and holding the family together, at least two of his three daughters are annoyed with him.

  • Conclusion: To say I enjoyed this movie is an understatement. It's replete with everything you could possibly want in a movie like this--a fresh, engaging, and entertaining story, great acting, and a few good life lessons thrown in for good measure. This Blu-ray edition sports a very good video presentation, a reserved but effective audio presentation, and a fun helping of extra material.

  • Excerpt: It is rare that a film completely catches me by surprise but this one surely did. It is rare that a film captures something that is near and dear to your heart and judging from the trailers for this I would never have thought this would be one that would.

Dan in Real Life

High-Def Digest

  • Conclusion: 'Dan in Real Life' is a romantic comedy that bucks convention and doesn't pump up the melodrama for cheap effect. It also lacks the big belly laughs and more biting humor of most previous Steve Carell films, however, so don't expect another '40 Year-Old Virgin.' This Blu-ray release is perfectly nice. The video looks sharp, the audio is simple but well done, and there are plenty of enjoyable extras.

Dan In Real Life

Cinema Blend

  • Excerpt: Maybe you look at that poster for Dan In Real Life and you wonder what the heck to make of it. Is this a drama? Is it a comedy? Why on earth is Steve Carell in this and why does he have his head smashed up against a stack of pancakes? Ignore all those nagging questions. Forget whatever preconceived notions you might have from those pointless Hollywood trailers.

Dan In Real Life

AV Club
26 October 2007
  • Excerpt: In bare description, Dan In Real Life sounds like a movie no one should want to see. Steve Carell plays a widowed parental advice columnist whose three daughters, get this, don't feel like he has all the answers. On an annual family outing to close up the summer home owned by his parents (Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney), he meets a luminous, charmingly accented woman (Juliette Binoche) who's similarly smitten but reluctant to give up her phone number because she's on the...
