Excerpt: As the film opens, the first few scenes are set in Colombia. Using high levels of saturation of the various yellows and browns of the favelas, Latino skin tones and roads, the level of detail is excellent. The same can be said when the movie shifts to America. The jail scene features plenty of blacks and greys of the uniforms, security cameras and jail cell walls, and with signs of crushing blacks, detail is again near reference quality.
Excerpt: As long as studios can count on just enough young men to go see relatively cheap action movies we can count Luc Besson and his various protégés to keep making them, which is rapidly becoming a depressing example of the fall of a formerly great talent.
Excerpt: Video gamers probably remember Batman’s excessive vent punching and crawling in 2009′s Arkham Asylum , wholly appropriate a comparison to Zoe Saldana in Colombiana . No, she’s not donning Bat garb, although there is a revealing, skin-tight Catwoman-esque body suit. She’s just a vent escape artist. It’s fascinating how unguarded air ducts and their entrances can be. Then again, maybe it’s all build up for her rocket-fueled vengeance during the finale.
Excerpt: Luc Besson has fashioned a bit of a factory for himself. Though he rarely seems to step behind the camera these days, he doesn't let his ideas go to waste, whether he's co-writing scripts or merely providing stories to other writers. The only problem with this output is that it gets to be a little too consistent. For the last several decades, Besson has been obsessed with the ethics and methods of assissins as well as what it means to get revenge.
Conclusion: 'Colombiana' is an empty spectacle of action and superficial thrills — the sort of B-quality guilty pleasure that only promises a diversion of popcorn entertainment. While most of the Luc Besson production is a standard vengeance plot, Zoe Saldana's terrifically moving performance as a young woman thirsting for revenge is the true selling point and the highlight of the entire film.
Excerpt: Luc Besson is responsible for two of the greatest assassin films of all time. In Leon: The Professional and La Femme Nikita the French writer/director presented not just remarkable fight scenes and high tension, but rich characters living isolated lives and resisting close relationships.
Excerpt: The latest bag of pork rinds from producer Luc Besson, a leading purveyor of high-calorie/low-nutrition entertainment, Colombiana opens with a little girl witnessing her parents’ murder in Colombia, moving to America, and coming back to take revenge as an adult. Basically, it’s Robert De Niro’s subplot in The Godfather Part II , fused with the slick assassination games of Besson’s breakthrough film, La Femme Nikita .
