Conclusion: I understand how painful it can be to see one of your favorite films remade, but it's worth noting that if you love something very much, no matter how good the remake is, it will never compare to the real thing. For those who know Brian De Palma's 'Carrie,' Kimberly Peirce's 'Carrie' will never live up to it – but that doesn't mean that it can't be an equal in the eyes of those who are either too young or cinematically inexperienced to know De Palma's.
Conclusion: Obvious care and craftsmanship went into the new Carrie , but I suspect that anyone familiar with the original will watch it ticking off the similarities and differences between it and De Palma's version rather than being drawn into the world of the film. Viewers new to the story may be entertained, but they may wonder what all the fuss was about.
Excerpt: Near the climax of Kimberly Peirce's remake of Carrie , Margaret White (Julianne Moore), the wrathful and penitent mother of the titular telekinetic outcast, rationalizes her unthinkable actions by explaining that the devil can be killed, but will always come back for more, "so you've got to keep killing him again and again.
Excerpt: Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is a young woman with little joy in her life, at home or in school. At home, her overbearing mother punishes her for everything, as well as berates her with verbal tirades, often for no good reason. She is abused all the time, sometimes beaten by her mother, sometimes locked inside a closet, never loved or cared for, to say the least.
