Captain America: The Winter Soldier 3D Blu-ray Review
15 September 2014
Excerpt: Credit goes to the ever deepening Marvel saga for finding a way to continually produce lavish, even innovative action set-ups ten core films into this media mash-up. Captain America’s follow through, free from the restraints of origin stories, is an absolute thriller – figuratively and literally. Winter Soldier is indebted to political, CIA story twisters as much as it is to mammoth blockbusters, unusually smart and intertwined into contemporary fears.
Conclusion: 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' is a terrific homage to '70s conspiracy thrillers and another solid entry in the every-improving Marvel Cinematic Universe. This Blu-ray + Digital HD combo pack offers perfect video and a reference quality 7.1 sound mix, though the Special Features are a bit lacking despite a great Audio Commentary. Your only choice to make -- to 3D or not to 3D?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Blu-ray Review
9 September 2014
Excerpt: The Film "Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye." Chris Evans is back to fill the boots of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Sure, we just saw him in 2012's The Avengers , but he's back in the spotlight -- which is sorely needed, given everything that he's been through since 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger . Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes our buff superhero out of the 1940s and puts him into modern-day Washington, D.C.
Excerpt: I was lucky enough to grow up during Marvel’s wonderful rebirth of the 1960′s and 1970′s. Of all of the comics they produced during that time, I was always least impressed with Captain America. I don’t think I ever read an issue of any of his mags with the notable exception of The Avengers .
Conclusion: Captain America: The Winter Soldier only accelerates Marvel's upward momentum, while somehow promising even better things are to come. As much a wiry, dramatic conspiracy thriller as it is an action-packed comicbook blockbuster, the Cap sequel places Steve Rogers squarely atop the Avengers' roster and delivers one of Marvel Studios' best, not to mention one of the finest comicbook movies of all time.
Conclusion: A slight improvement over its predecessor, Captain America: The Winter Soldier still ranks near the bottom of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and reinforces this series as the studio's weakest active one. Watchable and with some good moments, the film nonetheless devotes too much thought to action and not enough to anything else. The result is a lot of action for action's sake that is much less engaging than it should be.
