Bryan Ferry: Live in Lyon (Blu-ray)

DVD Verdict
6 October 2013
  • Excerpt: Bryan Ferry is the rare man in rock who has somehow managed to carve a niche for himself that extends from the '70s until now without ever a blip or flounder in his style or influence. One reason for his longevity is he was always a crooner, and his laidback vocal stylings work now the same as ever even though time has marched on and somewhat ravaged his smoky voice.

  • Summary: Also included is a 39-page booklet, which includes a summary of Ferry’s career by English writer Michael Bracewell and bios of the “Olympia” tour musicians. This impressive Blu-ray is a fitting, career-spanning encapsulation of an artist whose music has always been a combination of the past and present.

  • Summary: The term "crooner" would hardly seem to be one associated with the music of the seventies and eighties, unless one were considering the late career efforts of singers like Sinatra or Bennett. But a much younger man might at least be tangentially thought of as an almost off the cuff vocalist, at least that is if the cuff were elegantly linked and made of the finest fabric available.
