Excerpt: Ethan (Aiden Ehrenreich from "Tetro") is a happy-go-luck Southern boy from the small town of Gatlin, South Carolina who does an inordinate amount of reading and just as much dreaming particularly about a mysterious girl who one day appears in his classroom. She is Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert) who lives in the creepy Ravenwood Manor and Ethan decides to follow her there where he meets her eccentric uncle Macon (Jeremy Irons).
Excerpt: Does the world need another fantasy-driven teen romance franchise? Warner Bros. certainly thinks so. Based on a series of books popular with the teen crowd, Beautiful Creatures is an attempt to fill the void left by the end of Twilight . Take some elements from the Harry Potter movies, a dash of Romeo and Juliet, and the basic story of Twilight . Mix them all together and you end up with Beautiful Creatures , a mildly entertaining movie for its intended audience.
Conclusion: Yes, 'Beautiful Creatures' is yet another 'Twilight' inspired supernatural teen romance, but it has a few sparks of personality and heart. Sadly, that can't quite make up for the script's muddled mythology and very generic second half. While there are some minor inconsistencies, the video and audio presentations are both good with no major technical concerns. Unfortunately, most of the supplements are merely redundant and fluffy promo pieces.
Excerpt: The Film The Twilight torch has been passed. Well, sort of. They tried to pass it, but Beautiful Creatures must have been taking a nap. Maybe they didn't add enough eye of newt or something. Because Beautiful Creatures has the star-crossed lovers, the supernatural powers, and of course, the beautiful creatures. That said, it just can't conjure up the same magic (or money) as Bella and Edward.
Conclusion: The public's pitiful reception of Beautiful Creatures suggests it is a lame attempt to cash in on the Twilight craze. While there's obviously an element of that to this production's timing, this supernatural romantic drama is its own entity with more substantial characters and themes. The film is not without some problems, but it's better than the dismissal it got.
Conclusion: Beautiful Creatures pines for Twilight glory but comes up short, delivering a deformed clone with more superpowers but less heart or appeal. And considering the Twilight series had its own share of debilitating issues, Creatures is something of a mess, over-sold, overacted and overwhelmingly dull.
Excerpt: I’m hard-pressed to find a recent film that doesn’t draw inspiration from something superhero based or that doesn’t involve vampires or witches. Ok, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch but when Beautiful Creatures arrived at my doorstep, my wife said “Oh, I heard that’s supposed to be good, it’s about vampires or something. Like Twilight .” I had no idea that eyes could roll back as much as mine did after hearing that, but everything’s fine now.
Conclusion: Beautiful Creatures was more enjoyable than I expected in many ways. I enjoyed the fact that it was as much as simple love story between two young people as it was about supernatural powers. The film has quite a cast, and I couldn’t believe how much Emmy Rossum has grown up since seeing her in The Day After Tomorro w. Male fans of Emmy Rossum will want to be sure to watch the deleted scenes to catch a glimpse of her in black lingerie.
